Microsoft Windows Live OneCare

Who knows better how Windows is suppose to operate than Microsoft? I think no one, and that is why I have relied upon Microsoft's newest product Live OneCare to resolve issues related to Malware changing desktop appearance and Internet Explorer functionality.

CleanUP!

We found this program while searching for an automated method to efficiently clean a hard drive. CleanUp! is a powerful and easy-to-use application that removes temporary files created while surfing the web, empties the Recycle Bin, deletes files from your temporary folders and more.

CCleaner

CCleaner is another program we found similar to CleanUP! with a few different features. CCleaner also features a safe registry cleaner and third-party application cleaner. I use this program with CleanUp! for a thorough system cleaning.

Routine Maintenance

Unlike a new car, computers do not come with owner's manuals so new owners are left to discover on their own what type of maintenance is required on their new computer. Here is the list of what I put together.

Daily
Have your antivirus set to update every day (preferably in the morning). This is a must. New viruses can be released and some of them cannot be defeated without the newest virus definitions.

Weekly
Have the anrivirus software set to run a full system scan at least once a week.
Update and run AdAware adware blocker (optional dependant on how much internet usage was done and what type of sites were visited.)
Update and run SpyBot spyware blocker (optional dependant on how much internet usage was done and what type of sites were visited.)
Open the Windows Defender program and make sure it is staying up to date
and running daily scans.

Monthly
Clean up your hard drive using CleanUp! and CCleaner

Run Disk defragmenter
Click Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter -
Click "OK" on first screen that pops up.
Run Windows updates
Click Start - Windows Updates

Run Microsoft Office Updates if you are using Outlook for your email client.

Open any Office product and Click menu item Help - Check for Updates

Quarterly

Shut down the computer and unplug it. Open the computer side door and clean out any dust with a can of DustOff or a small vacuum cleaner.

Self Repair Solutions

Provided here are some solutions I believe the average user can accomplish.

Computer freezes and lockups up. Possible hard drive errors. Run check disk from the hard drive properties menu. Make sure you select to fix errors and recover bad sectors. Reboot and allow scan to run a full check on your hard drive.
